First Sex Toys for Men: Types, Budgets, and What to Check Before You Buy

Plenty of men have never bought a sex toy, often because the options seem confusing or the topic feels awkward. In reality, toys for men are a normal part of sexual wellness, and choosing a first one is mostly a matter of matching a type to your budget and how much cleanup you are willing to do. This guide explains the main categories, from simple sleeves to vibrating and prostate toys, what each costs, and the specs to look for on a product page. Product details come from manufacturer pages; health points come from medical sources.

Why use a toy at all?

A toy adds sensations your hand cannot easily create, such as suction, texture, or vibration. Some men use toys simply for variety, others to slow down and pay more attention to their own responses. There is no medical need to use one, and no need to justify it either. The practical questions are what type suits you, how much to spend, and how to keep it clean.

Type 1: Sleeves and strokers

A sleeve (called "onahole" in Japan, and "stroker" or "masturbator" in US shops) is a soft tube with a textured inside, used with lube. It is the most common first toy for men and comes in two kinds:

As examples from one well-known Japanese maker, TENGA's official US store lists the POCKET TENGA at $3.99, the EGG at $6.99, and the ORIGINAL VACUUM CUP at $9.99 (all single-use), and reusable items such as the SPINNER at $25.99, GEO at $37.99, and FLIP ZERO at $109.99, as of October 2026. Our TENGA guide and onahole guide explain these in more detail.

Type 2: Suction and pressure-control designs

Some sleeves let you change the feeling while you use them. Closed-ended designs keep air inside, which creates a suction feeling. Others add controls: TENGA's FLIP ZERO has pressure pads on both sides to adjust internal suction, the PUFFY has a soft case you squeeze to change pressure, and the FLEX twists to tighten. These are still manual, with no batteries, which keeps them simple to clean.

Type 3: Vibrating and powered toys

Powered toys add vibration, rotation, or automated motion. Examples include vibrating sleeves and attachments. TENGA's FLIP ZERO EV, for instance, adds two vibration cores with five modes to the FLIP ZERO design and is rechargeable; it is listed at $249.99 on TENGA's US store as of October 2026. TENGA also sells powered attachments, such as the VACUUM GYRO ROLLER, that fit its disposable ORIGINAL VACUUM CUP.

Powered toys cost more and need extra care: check the water-resistance rating before rinsing, keep charging ports dry, and follow the manual. They make more sense as a second purchase, once you know what sensations you like.

Type 4: Prostate toys (an introduction)

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that sits below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It produces most of the fluid in semen (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Because it is close to the front wall of the rectum, some men find gentle pressure there pleasurable, and toys designed for this are shaped to curve toward it.

It is worth being clear about what these toys are for. A Cleveland Clinic urologist explains that prostate massage is used today mainly for sexual stimulation, and that "there's no evidence that a prostate massage provides any medical benefit" (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Ignore marketing that promises health effects.

If you are curious, the safety basics are:

Do not use prostate toys if you have a known or suspected prostate infection. Mayo Clinic notes that doctors avoid prostate massage in acute bacterial prostatitis because it can spread bacteria into the blood. See a doctor or urologist if you have pain when urinating or ejaculating, fever with pelvic pain, blood in urine or semen, or rectal bleeding.

What to check on a product page

A simple path for your first purchase

  1. Try one or two single-use sleeves in a medium or "Regular" strength.
  2. If you enjoy it, buy one reusable sleeve that is handheld and easy to clean, plus a water-based lube.
  3. Learn the cleaning routine: wash right after use with lukewarm water and mild soap, then dry completely before storing. Our toy care guide covers the details.
  4. Only then consider powered or prostate toys, if you are curious.

Health and comfort basics

See a doctor or urologist if skin irritation, sores, swelling, or discharge last more than a few days, or if you notice changes in erections or ejaculation that worry you. These have many causes, most of them treatable. This guide is general information and does not replace medical advice.
